Spider-man : Reign - #1 / #2 - Marvel

I haven't quite got a feel for this book yet. That's why I did both issues together, instead of just the first one. The reason I'm having problems is because, as I read this, and look at the art, and think about the story, I'm really having a hard time not comparing it to Dark Knight. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, but, I'm sure they want the book to stand on it's own merits. But think about it, it's a story set, who knows how many, years in the future. The country is run by a corporation called Reign. I get the impression that the only real habitable space is in NYC. So now Reign want to enclose it in a force field, the Webb initiative, " . . . to continue to uphold this city to a higher standard and to protect you the people . . ". There are no super heroes, and by proxy, no super villains. And it seems like everybody is pretty copacetic and just goes with the status quo. The only real mudracker out there, a crotchety old man, who just happens to hate Spider-man, is J. Jonah Jameson. And he is a loud voice for reform. And like Dark Knight, we have an old retired, out of shape, hero who gets called into action by circumstance. He even talks to the ghost of his wife, MJ. Now, since he's come back, Reign has decided to bring some of the villians out of retirement. So here's this skinny old guy, that yes he's still talented and agile, but he's still going to get the crap kicked out of him, just out of sheer numbers. And in the end, as he's laying on the ground in a crumpled heap, beaten and tattered and torn, it looks like he's captured . . . . . or saved . . . . . by Dr. Octopus. Now I could be wrong, but to me, it looks like someone took the Dark Knight story, and reworked it. Like I said, I could be wrong, but so far in the first 2 issues, I don't see anything original. And I want to like it. I want to see the future of Spider-man. But, I want to see an original story. But there's 2 more issues, so, who knows? The other thing that bothers me about this book, is that, before the first issue even came out, they had solicitations for the Trade Paperback. I mean, if that's the intentions, why not just put it out in a binded edition right from the start? I know, more sales, more revenue, more accessibility to the consumer. Whatever! That's what bothers me about this medium sometimes! Sometimes it's more about the marketing ploys, ideas or revenues, than about the story, art or originality. But they got me to buy it, so I guess their scheming worked. Thanks!
