The Black Queen has brought in Shadowpact to try to sell Pawn 502 to Kobra as one of their own. Every organization out there has tried to put an agent in place to infiltrate Kobra's ranks. But they have all failed, and then been killed. The problem is they have people known as inquisitors. They do this thing, a blood ritual, where they actually read peoples blood. Not like a book. But to see what their true beliefs and motivations are. So, in order to get their guy past the last hurdle, they have to get him to sell the blood rite. Which, is where Shadowpact comes in. You know, with all the hinky, hoo-doo, black magic stuff. Enchantress has to cast a spell at the exact moment that the inquisitor is trying to read his blood. She succeeds, but " . . . the spell is permanent. It would hardly suit your purpose otherwise, would it?" " . . . . he's one of them now, one of the initiated, one of the true believers . . . . we can only pray he doesn't forget why he's there." In for a penny, in for a pound, I guess. Greg Rucka is doing a fantastic job with this series. It's miles better than it's first incarnation. But, we'll just have to wait to see how long it lasts. I guess it just depends on the readers.
