Ultimate Comics Avengers #5 - Marvel

Mark Millar is doing a fantastic job with this series. But then . . who would've expected anything less? So far in this story we discovered that the Red Skull is actually Steve's son. With this knowledge, Steve has decided to strike out on his own to get him. The problem is, he has to go AWOL to do it. Which prompts Nick Fury to reform SHIELD's black ops team, the Avengers. In this series the team consists of Nick, the Red Wasp, Nerd Hulk, War Machine and Black Widow. The drama is heightened because the Black Widow is also Nick's ex-wife. While this was going on, AIM had broken in to the Baxter Building and stole Reed's plans for the Cosmic Cube. The Red Skull finds this out and heads to the Alaskan complex to retrieve it for himself. That's where this issue picks up. The team has recently landed in Alaska and is confronted by a Cosmic Cube wielding Red Skull. Needless to say, they don't have the firepower for this kind of confrontation. But . . they're trying. Meanwhile, Steve has been captured by SHIELD in France. Which also happens to be SHIELD's trillion dollar hardware dump. Steve wanted to get captured there so that he could get a teleport-plane to take him to wherever his son was. That's been his plan all along. Let the Avengers follow and confront the Red Skull, and then he'll swoop in and mop up the pieces. But with the Cosmic Cube involved, this may be a little more than even he can handle. We'll see next issue when they wrap up the first chapter in this series. So far it's been a thrilling ride. Oh yeah . . we also found out in this issue that the Red Skull . . in this dimension . . was responsible for the assassination of JFK. That was something I wasn't expecting. I don't know that it was entirely necessary, but . . it was definitely unexpected. Mark has of course been doing an exemplary job. And even Carlos Pacheco has risen to the challenge and created a great visual ride. Next issue should be a heck of a book. Plus . . that leads us into chapter 2 of this series. And . . the new Ultimates are back with their own series also. It seems that the relaunch of this Ultimate Universe is expanding pretty fast. I wonder what's next?
