R.E.B.E.L.S. #14 - DC

This issue wraps up the Starro the Conqueror storyline. Although not the way we expected it to end. The Omega Men are approaching Vril Dox's location with the Starfish toxin that they found. While Adam Strange has Starro in his sights with the weapon that Vril constructed of the Gamma Gong. Not only doesn't Vril's gun work on him, but . . with Starro in such close proximity to the Starro's that the Psion's were experimenting on . . 'They were supposed to be off his "psychic grid", so to speak . . but now that he's seen them . . he's reasserting control.' The same thing happens with the so called 'black' or 'negative' Starro's that the Psion's gave the Omega Men. But they do shoot off the toxin darts before he gains control. However, in the end . . the only ones left are Vril, Elu, Wildstar and Despero. But Despero isn't much help because Starro scoops out his psychic third eye. For all of his planning, Vril couldn't pull this one off. That is until . . Starro pulls him in close to finish him off. It turns out human flesh is immune to the toxin. However, when he picks up a dart and puts it in the flesh of the Strarro on the Conqueror's body . . it immediately goes into a state of paralysis and he loses contact his hordes of Starros across the galaxy. In essence . . his bid to take over the universe has been brought to a halt. But they may have traded one tyrant for another. As soon as Starro goes down Vril sends out a message. 'If you are hearing my voice now, then you owe your freedom to me. Starro the Conqueror is defeated. His intergalactic invasion force is dispersing, it's soldiers no longer slaves to his will. In the days to come I will announce plans for our mutual recovery and the reestablishment of my peacekeeping organization L.E.G.I.O.N. And, of course, I will inform your leaders how they can repay me.' So now Vril begins the difficult task of not only rebuilding and organizing the universe, but also rebuilding and reasserting L.E.G.I.O.N. Hopefully with the Omega Men, Adam Strange, Captain Comet . . and some of the others he's gathered around him . . hopefully some of them will be able to help to keep him in check. And what of Vril's son, Lyrl? He was supposed to contact Smite, but he never did. I wonder where he got off to. Tony Bedard is doing a great job with this series. As is Claude St Aubin. I do have a question though. With all the recent attention on Brainiac, and Brainiac 5 looking into his heritage in the future, would that make Vril Brainiac 2? Everyone keeps referring to Lyrl as Brainiac 3, so . . that would be the logical assumption. Right?
