Wolverine #70 - Marvel

Right now this book is . . . fan-frikkin-tastic! I think Mark Millar is an incredible writer. But he really seems to be doing an exemplary job here with Logan and Clint Barton. When this chapter first started and this whole premise popped up about Logan going on this road-trip with Clint . . I wasn't really sure what to make of it. But then . . the camaraderie and dialogue that they've shared over the course of this story . . is absolutely perfect. Last issue Logan got Clint's butt out of a sling with his daughter, and grand-daughter of Peter Parker, who was ready to kill him. This issue he confides in Clint to tell him why he's sworn never to become Wolverine again, and what's caused him to forever sheath his claws. Hell, they might be rusty by the time he does bring them out. But first I want to say that I absolutely love Steve McNiven's pencils on this series. They're crisp and clean and they've really brought a great look and feel to this chapter of Wolverines' story. I absolutely love the detail that he puts into every panel. It's amazing. Really! Years ago, but probably in our future, the mansion is attacked by a squad a super-villains. Rather than striking out on solo missions, the villains of the world have finally figured out that there's strength in numbers. Plus, if they plan their attacks right, they should be able to defeat any foe. So they've sent a group into the mansion. When they come blasting through the wall, they immediately take out Jubilee. Then they start blasting their way through the school. The kids are trying to escape into the tunnels but Wolverine has to make a stand solo because the rest of the X-Men are on a mission. He starts slashing and clawing his way through the group . . thinking, I'm sure, about Jubilee and the safety of the rest of the kids. He doesn't go into his animistic rage, but . . he also doesn't show any mercy. He takes them down with all the ruthlessness that he can muster. He finally beats the last one . . Bullseye. As he lying in his arms bleeding out he says to Wolverine . ."Logan, please stop. Why are you doing this? You're supposed to be our friend . . ." Come to find out the villains did get together but they sent 1 man after the X-Men . . . Mysterio. All he had to do was create the illusion in Logan's eyes and he did all the work. He took out all the villains by himself. But when he comes out of his fog and starts to look around . . . all he sees are X-Men lying on the ground all around him. He was tricked into taking out all of his fellow teammates. That's when he separated himself from the world and decided that he was never going to be Wolverine again. But I'm not sure how long he can keep that promise. As they enter the next phase of their journey they're about to find out that Venom is on their tail. The problem is . . . Venom's current host is a dinosaur. The thing I love about Mark's stories are the uniqueness and complexity of the original ideas that he presents within them. This one is no exception. This is a masterpiece in the making. As I said . . . fan-frikkin-tastic!
