the New Avengers #48 - Marvel

Ok, by now we should all know that the Skrulls failed in their attempt at taking over the Marvel Universe. Right? Well . . it's done. But it's not clean. It's a bit messy actually. Although the invasion has been halted, they still don't know if they've all been taken care of or if there's still some lurking about. And, in their wake, things have really been shaken up. Tony has accepted blame for the invasion and as a result has been asked to resign from the Avengers and from SHIELD. Also, nobody really even knows whether or not SHIELD is a functioning entity. But, in the wake of everything that's happened, they have to turn to someone. So, the government, in all of their infinite wisdom, has asked Norman Osborne and his Thunderbolts unit to fill the void that Stark has left behind. There's some brilliant political thinking for you. So, with all of this going on, Bucky, now Cap, has decided to put together a hand-picked unit of Avengers. So would they be called the New-New-Avengers? Anyways, they consist of Cap, obviously, Wolverine, Spider-man, Ronin, Mockingbird (a whole 'nother subject entirely), Spider-woman, Ms Marvel, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, and Danny Rand . . kind of. That's around 10 members. And there are some pretty good members in this group, but . . things could change at the drop of a hat. Danny's already said that while he would love to help, he can't devote all of his time to it. He's got to many personal and business things that need to be taken care of. Also, we got the whole thing about Luke and Jessica's baby being taken by Jarvis. Well . . the Skrull Jarvis. This new group does the best it can to try to find her, but . . it's hard to get information out of a Skrull when you're surrounded by people that want it dead. When they do finally find one, and ex-SHIELD agent shoots her before she can answer any questions. Which leaves the team back at zero. But, Luke is willing to use whatever resources he can so . . . he goes to the Thunderbolts. He tells Norman that if he, and his group, help him find his baby, he'll agree to work for them. I think he just sold his soul to the devil. I liked this issue. It was supposedly a tie-in to Dark Reign, but . . if so, it was just remotely. Well . . I guess it would be a tie-in since we saw Norman's face in one panel. Funny how that works. I hope Brian Bendis will keep most of the players he's put together her. Although, I can't imagine why the group would need Spider-man and Spider-Woman. So one of them will probably leave. Anyways, I also enjoyed Bill Tan's pencils. I really like the feel that he gives his characters. Now . . . about Mockingbird. Since I'm not an Avengers expert, and am only remotely knowledgeable about the West Coast Avengers, I'm going to refer you to X-Man 75's blog. It's at xmanscomicblog.blogspot.com. He's gone into this situation about Bobbi Morse a couple of times, and explains it a whole lot better than I ever could.

  1. Hey man, thanks for the plug, it's very much appreciated! I was OK with this comic, but to me, this team just doesn't FEEL like the Avengers, if that makes any sense. Except for Clint, Bobbi and Ms. Marvel, this "team" is basically a loose assortment of solo heroes.

I'm in total agreement with you about Spidey and Spider-Woman, and I would personally prefer Spidey to go. I've always seen Spidey as a solo hero, who occasionally, when necessary, will team-up with other heroes. I don't know about you, but Spidey always worked best for me as the loner hero.

And don't even get me started on Wolverine! Is there some rule somewhere that states that Wolvie has to be on EVERY team in the Marvel Universe!
