the Amazing Spider-man #554 - Marvel

Well, the first story-arc in this new series, yielded the new villain Menace. This one's new malady is . . . Freak. Dr Connors explains it all, " . . six hypodermic serums of animal stem cells were removed from a case and injected . . I found the empty needles. The stem cells came from various mammals, amphibians and insects. They mixed with the drugs in his system and caused a mutation . . and then a re-mutation. When the first one was shot . . he didn't die. His eyes prove it. One blue. One brown. A genetic condition not present in my lab animals . . . which means it was present in the addict. One of the serums was caterpillar cells, so after he was shot and fell into the sewer, he returned to the same chrysalis state . . . like when they first found him. His volatile stem cells learned from his first experience and evolved, so he re-emerged bulletproof . . . if he emerges again, he'll be fireproof . . . and more powerful." I guess that about explains it all. So now Peter knows who the guy is. Or . . at least . . he's seen him, when he was robbing the "feast center". I guess that's the politically correct term for "soup kitchen". Whatever. Anyways, Spidey also gives JJJ another stroke this issue, when he stops by for a visit and he lets it slip that the DB is actually the Daily Bugle. Whoops! Somebody should've put up a sign. He's had more lip action with 'ol JJJ the last couple of issue than he has with . . well . . a woman. I was gonna say Mary Jane, but we don't really know where she's at right now. Spidey's still wanted for the murders. You know, the one's that had his tracers on them. And when Spidey goes to save Crowne from the Freak, rather than expressing gratitude, he express' that it's his fault that the Freak is there in the first place. Peter just can't catch a break right now. Poor guy. Bob Gale wrote this one, with Phil Jiminez on pencils. But next issue Chris Bachalo comes on board as the penciller. Well if nothing else, it's an exciting series.
