Uncanny X-Men #504 - Marvel

I'm not complaining, but . . Greg Land isn't around for this issue. Terry Dodson does the pencils and cover. I love Terry's work, as I do Greg's. The problem with Greg's though . . while it looks fantastic, the amount of work that goes into it, I'm sure, doesn't lend itself well to a monthly title. I can't imagine that you could do to many issues in a row, looking that good, without having to take a break. If for no other reason than to stay on schedule. Which, in a nutshell, is what we have here. However, if we can't have Greg, Terry is a more than acceptable fill-in. I mean that in the kindest possible sense. I would never, ever, think of Terry as a fill-in artist. Sorry! Anyways, on to the story. There's actually quite a few things going on this issue. First is appears that Madelyne . . yes she's back . . is in the Mojoverse trying to put together some type of deal. We don't get a whole lot of information, it's really only a couple of panels, but . . she's obviously up to no good. Next we see that Peter is still having trouble coping. He's doing stupid stuff like trying to get a tattoo, and admits to Kurt that he hasn't been Peter in weeks. Then, while visiting a little Russian deli, he hears some commotion in the back. His first response is to help. But when he looks, he sees a tattooed man he knows from his youth and he runs off scared. Very uncharacteristic of him. Next we see that Emma is suspicious of the missing time that she's noticed from their Hellfire Cult raid. She wants to know what's happened and wants to take a little look around in Scott's psyche. The most disturbing thing she finds is Scott's little black box. It's where he keeps the secrets that he doesn't want anyone else to know. But, to Emma, what's even more disturbing than that is that Jean is the one that showed him how to do it. Meanwhile, Hank and Warren are down in Buenos Aires trying to recruit a Dr. Nemesis to aide in Henry's quest to reverse the magic that the Scarlet Witch created on M-Day. It takes a while but they convince him to join the X-Men. And finally, it appears that there's another mutant birth in Alaska. At least I think so. The details seem pretty similar to those in the Mutant Messiah story-line. So I'm a little confused as to whether this is a new birth, or if the news channel is just revisiting an old story. It was kind of weird the way they showed it on the last 2 pages. Anyways, I'm enjoying Matt Fractions stories here. He definitely has a certain style to him. I don't necessarily feel like he's completely comfortable here yet, but . . I'm sure he will be soon. We're all expecting great things from you, Matt.
