Ultimate Fantastic Four #53 - Marvel

First of all, this one is by Mike Carey and Tyler Kirkman. The story, I think, is great. I like the twist Mike put in it, with Reed's control over the cube being the weight that tips the scale in his favor. I mean, honestly, this is the Fantastic Four. So, ultimately, we knew that Reed was going to find a way to beat Thanos. It really was just a matter of time, and the question of how he was going to do it. Somehow, Ben garners the favor of Atrea, Thanos' daughter, and she takes him back to Reed's corpse on Acheron. In Reed's battle with Thanos, he knew that he couldn't ultimately beat Thanos there. So, he used the power of the cube to turn himself into a light-like being, and cover himself with a fake shell. He thought it would fool Thanos. Which it did, but it also left him depleted of energy, so he couldn't escape. That's where Atrea and Ben come in. They bring him out of his shell . . as it were. From there, they go back to Earth. Reed asks Atrea and Ben to distract Thanos for a minute while he puts a plan in place. First he frees Sue and Johnny. Then, he turns off his override switch in the cube. You know how, in a Corvette, there's a switch you can turn on so that if someone borrows your car they can't go over a certain speed limit? Basically, it shuts off the top gears. Well, Reed put something similar in to the cube. Everyone has random thoughts, wishes and concerns that run through their head every second of every day. Well, if the person who was wielding the cube, let the cube act on all these random thoughts . . well, anything could happen. So Reed put in a switch essentially to make the cube ignore these thoughts. After he brought Sue and Johnny out of the cube's influence, he turned off the switch. He knew that Thanos would realize his plan and grab the cube. That would also be his undoing, because one of the main thought that runs through his head is how much he misses the caress of Death. So what does the cube do? It kills him. Reed then uses the cube to get everything back the way it was . . or as close as possible. But what's he going to do with the cube? He can't destroy it, and it would probably be impossible to hide. So, he uses it to create a space-time rift and then fulfills destiny. He drops in into the hole, and directly in to Thanos' hands . . 30,000 years ago. Thereby keeping the circle alive. I'm not sure if I agree entirely with the ending, but . . I don't know how else they could've worked it out. It wrapped everything up, but, to me, it also put Reed in a position that he wouldn't normally be in . . or put himself in. But, necessity is the mother of invention, so . . he had to figure out a way to keep the cube out of other's hands. The past is the past. It's already happened. So by doing what he did, he just kept things in the right order . . on track. It's not clean. But . . it does wrap things up. Anyways, I'm just glad we'll be moving in to a new story-line next issue. I know this is the FF's bread and butter, but, it was starting to drag for me. And hopefully we'll get a new artist next issue, because I'm not overly thrilled with Tyler's stuff.
