Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters #1 - DC

This is a good book. Of course I'm a little biased because I love the Freedom Fighters. Even with all the new additional members. This incarnation consists of the usual; Uncle Sam, the Ray, Phantom Lady, the Human Bomb, Doll Man and Black Condor. But the additional members are Red Bee, Miss America and Firebrand. They're already using this format to update one of the characters, Red Bee. The issue starts out with them caught in an alien spaceship. The aliens are giant insects, and they want to come and colonize the Earth. Or course our team can't let that happen. But when they go up to stop them, Red Bee is almost instantly taken captive. Long story short, while captive she adjusts to the language and feel of the insects. When she finally understands what they're saying, she breaks out and goes to confront the Queen. Basically she just address' her as if she were the Queen of her own colony. But during all this she has actually mutated in to being more insect like herself. But I don't think we've seen all the changes in her yet. Also SHADE has split the team in two. I'm not sure if it was by design, or accident. Basically they want the team to be a peace keeping force for meta-humans. Especially the bad guys. And they want them to monitor and surviel them, so they can stop them before they have a chance to do something wrong. Some of the team members don't like the idea of a pre-emptive police force. So they go off, back to the homestead, until, as Uncle Sam puts it " . . if you get the approval of the American people to carry out this initiative, then let us know." The members that go back with US include Firebrand, the Human Bomb and Doll Man. All the women, and Ray and Black Condor stay behind. So in the next few weeks, as SHADE is promoting this, everybody in this group becomes celebrities. And the Red Bee is going through another metamorphosis as she wraps herself in a giant cacoon. Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti are at the helm of yet another book. And Renato Arlem, recently of Hawkgirl, does the pencils. Renato shows a lot of promise. But, I have to say, I liked his stuff in Hawkgirl better. I'm not sure why, but I just did. Anyways, this series could prove interesting. As soon as we find out where we're going with all of this.
