the Trials of SHAZAM! #8 - DC

First of all, I have to say, that I think Judd Winick is a fantastic writer. This character, and this series, is a perfect fit for him. He appears to be at the top of his form. Secondly, and I've said this before, I believe that Howard Porter is a hugely underrated talent. Sure he got the accolades when he was doing the JLA. But I think that was more for the stories and the characters. He fit in good with that, with Grant Morrison and everything, but he still didn't get the acknowledgment that he deserves. This guy is a fantastic talent. Go in to this book, pages 2 and 3, the double page spread, and look at the picture of Atlas wired up to a wall of monitors, so he can save the world. It's incredible. It's a picture like you'd see on the opening pages of an X-men story. I'm not comparing, it's just the highest form of compliment I can think of. Also he's kind of reinvented his style for this series. Probably because he does the pencils, inks and colors. But it really is a fantastic effort. Anyways, this issue Freddy and Zareb go to Atlas for his next test. But by the time they get there, he's gone. But they need a letter "A's" power for his magic word. So they get Billy to watch Atlas' post for a little while, he can only be away from the Rock for 24 hours. And they've gone to get Apollo. So he agrees, rather reluctantly. His trial for Freddy will be to fight him. If Freddy wins, Apollo will take over for Atlas, and Freddy will have passed his trial. But if Freddy fails, Apollo will stay in the form that he has assumed, and Freddy will die. And the issue ends with the two having swords drawn. Only 4 more issues to go. And Sabina is still out there somewhere. This is a Fantastic series!!
