First of all I'd like to say that I think Jim Starlin is the perfect choice to take on Jack Kirby's incredible epic of the New Gods. Who better is there to write these cosmic or universal themed stories? He's a natural. And, not only does he write it, but he draws it too. Simply incredible. I'd also like to give a nod to Matt Banning. He does the inks for Jim, and they're perfect. Being the first issue, we get a lot of divergent information, without really knowing how it's all connected. Obviously it is. But we're only being shown a small part of the picture here. We find out that the Black Racer is dead. As we knew, Jimmy Olsen is somehow tied in with all of this. This has been hinted at repeatedly in Countdown. Metron is plagued by a recurring dream. It appears to be the creation of something. A universe, a world . . he's not really sure. He just know that he doesn't like to see a puzzle that he doesn't know the answer for. Also his perceptions of the universe seem slightly askew. He thinks something of a cosmic nature is in progress. But, again, he doesn't know what. We get a glimpse of New Genesis. A holo-gram of Highfather is telling some youngsters the story of how New Genesis and Apokolips came in to being. Their creation seems really similar to Metron's dream. While there we find out that Magnar is also dead. But on Apokolips, with all the New God being killed, we are seeing the reemergence of many individuals we thought were dead. Including Kanto, Kalibak, the dwarf, and Virman Vundabar. Well maybe they weren't all dead. But that definitely did all fall out of favor with Darkseid. And finally on the last page another New God is killed. This time it's . . . . Barda. This series is going to shake up a lot of stuff. And with Jim at the helm, it's going to be an incredible ride.
