X-Men : Endangered Species #1 - Marvel

We have a new X-men crossover starting here. Essentially it's what we all knew. It just wasn't stated until now. "There have been no new manifestations of mutant power since Wanda's proclamation and no new mutant births. Once a race in millions, mutants now number a few hundred. The X-Men, previously charged to protect a world that hates and fears them, fight only for survival." So they went down to 188, according to the one series. But they've recently discovered that their race is not procreating. Not to say that they aren't doing it, but no mutant births have been found with Cerebro. The X-Men have gone to the funeral of a mutant boy. His identity really isn't important. What's important is that each death brings their species 1 step closer to extinction. So each death needs to be remembered and marked. Even Sebastian Shaw shows up for this one. But I think the only person that knows that is Xavier. Angel and Bobby even go so far as to ask Bishop why he didn't warn them. If he's from the future, why didn't he warn them of this devastation that would be inflicted upon them? He doesn't really have an answer, other than what he had heard was just legend. There were no records. Cyclops and Wolverine actually have a touching moment in the graveyard. No, not like that. Cyclops is frustrated and Wolverine helps him to put things in perspective. "Okay, with this kid it's obvious another grain of sand falls through into the bottom of the glass. You can sit here and watch it go. But the truth is, we're all fighting the same fight against the same odds, all the time we're alive. Easy to forget. But that's what life is. Right there. That fight not to be dead just yet. You know you're going down. Only question is how many rounds you last. But we don't stop fighting. Because . . . we don't know how." Pretty prophetic words there. This story is going to be told in 17 8 page chapters in the back of the X-men books across the summer. It starts in X-men #200, and goes the rest of the summer from there. By the end of the summer, I think were going to see some serious changes in characters, teams or alliances. Maybe all of the above. But I don't think we're going to be ending the summer looking the same as it started.
