The Boys #8 - Dynamite Entertainment

I really like this book. What I like so much is that it takes such an irreverent approach to the super-hero genre. It's almost like a "man on the street" type of approach. Not exactly. But in the sense that, these guys, Butcher and Hughie, look at the "supers" for what they really are. They know they're popular. They know they're supposedly heroes. And they know that most of them have some type of power. But beneath all that? Beneath all that, they're just guys with insecurities, problems, social disorders, OCD . . . and some of them are hiding some big skeletons in their closets. Take this guy on the cover here. He's not gay. He's not overly perverted. But . . . for some reason, he seems to have this compulsive disorder . . . to screw anything. But it's not the way he's always been. It's something that really has just occurred in the last few months. And he's really upset about it because he doesn't know what to do. The funny thing about this book, is that whenever Butcher or Hughie are researching a character . . . they turn to the comics. In this world, the "heroes" are so popular, and numerous, that the comics are thought of more as a way to chronicle their exploits. There's some artistic license. But more or less . . . . it's an actual account of their adventures and their lives. Well things for the Tek-Knight, the guy on the cover, are really about to hit the fan, because Butcher and Hughie are looking in to an 18 yr old gay guys death. And, without meaning or intention, they've been put on the Tek-Knight's trail. That's how the issue ends, with him answering his door, and when he opens it, Butcher and Hughie are standing on the other side. "Morning Guv. You wouldn't happen to be the Tek-Knight, by any chance?" And the next issue blurb reads "Dirty business in the Tek cave!" Fantastic story by Garth Ennis. He truly is a genius. And I'm really impressed by Darick Robertson's pencils. I've seen his stuff before. But, in this book, you can really tell that he has a personal interest. The whole book is fantastic. And now the fact that they're being published by Dynamite? Well, to me . . . that just means that from now on . . . they don't have to hold anything back. Not that they did before. But now? The gloves are truly off. I can't wait to see where we go from here.
