New Avengers #31 - Marvel

Well . . . this story just keeps getting more and more interesting. First we have the Avengers over in Japan fighting the Hand, and Elektra. It seems she is the leader of the Hand now. Anyways, they end up at the Silver Samurai's place, Castle Yashida. They've come to answer a distress call from one of their own, Ronin. Who is actually Maya Lopez, or Echo. By the time they get there, Elektra has killed her, and brought her back to life, all of which is the process from which the hand brainwashes someone. Dr. Strange tries to break the hold on Maya, but before he's sure of success, Maya seems to go back in to the Hand's control as she violently stabs Dr. Strange. Oh yeah, when the Avengers got this distress call, Clint Barton, Hawkeye, who's supposed to be dead, just happens to show up. He agrees to help, but he doesn't want to be Hawkeye anymore. He's probably sick of the MASH jokes. Anyways, he assumes the mantle of Ronin. So they go through this big battle, the Avengers against like a 1000 Ninja's, and Elektra. Everytime it seems like they're making some progress, it seems like 100 more join the fight. Hard telling where they're all coming from. So anyways, they decide that the only way they're going to get them to stop fighting is for Elektra to tell them to do so. Somehow when Maya hears this, she snaps. And she goes violently charging towards Elektra. Remember that picture where Bullseye kills Elektra and he has her piked up on his sword? Well that's what this looks like, except Maya looks madder. But that's not the end of the surprises. When they kill Elektra, the Ninja's all just retreat. Then when they look down on the fallen body of Elektra, they find out that she's actually a Skrull. That raises a lot of questions. And the same time that happens, back in Dr. Strange's house, Luke's baby pops her eyes open, and I swear they're a shade of green instead of white. Maybe it's just me, but that's what they look like. Anyways, incredible story by Bendis and Yu. I really thought this book was going to suffer because of the implications of the Civil War, and with the Mighty Avengers book out. But this one's still going strong, and if anything, the stories are getting better. Who'da thunk it?
