Superman / Batman #59 - DC

This one ended up being an interesting issue, and story-line. I thought that Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning did a great job with this one. The whole thing was resolved, and explained, but . . it wasn't over done. With all the various aspects and ideas that were introduced in this story . . the whole sub-microscopic world and everything . . this one could've taken a long time to roll-out, and explain. Basically, the Nanites were trying to 'over-load' Superman. When he exploded, it would've caused a rift in the space-time continuum that would've allowed the Nanites to invade the macroverse, our world. That was the immediate threat. But, Batman also had to worry about how long they were down here. With no direct contact with the sun's energy, Superman would eventually wither up and die. Anyways, Batman uses the parasites that took out his ship, on the way in, to suck out the excess energy from Superman's body. Then, they went after the Core . . the leader of the Nanites, and the source of their code. Batman surmised that they could use him to 'fix' the rest of the Nanites, and use his power against him by turning it into a beacon for Robin and John Henry to find them. Of course they accomplish all of this and spend the next couple days helping this world's denizens rebuild. Finally, they get out and find out that the whole thing only lasted a couple of minutes in real-world time. Things about the Prankster weren't really explained, but . . I still liked the book. It was a nice little story that wasn't overly complicated. Big 'revelations' or 'twists' weren't attempted, and the whole thing came across as a nice little tale. I also enjoyed Whilce Portacio's art. He's a great artist and he did a good job interpreting this new world and it's inhabitants. To me, this book really has the feel of the old World's Finest Comics. To those that don't know . . that's a compliment.

  2. I first came across their work when they did the Legion series. You know, the Legion Lost. I've been diggin' their stuff ever since.
