Supergirl #16 - DC

With this issue we finally learn about the true origins of Supergirl, Kara. Also we have our new creative team of Marc Sable and Ale Garza. Joe Kelly is still on board for story and dialogue, but Marc is handling the plots. I imagine that Marc will be taking over the full scripting chores, but they're probably working together for a couple of issues to make it a smooth transition. Also Ale, from Gen13 fame, really turns in some nice pencils this issue. Marlo Alquiza does his inks, and these 2 blend together very well. I'm not sure who was Ale's inker on Gen13, but I don't think they did him justice. He and Marlo's styles work together very well, and the result is some great interiors. Anyways we find out that the main reason Zor-el and Jor-el, his brother, don't get along is because they don't agree on the reasoning or the social/political ramifications of using the Phantom Zone as a detention center. Zor-el believed that because of the price it was putting on the population, to accept the punishment that the council meted out to these "undesirables", " . . Krypton was changing. The shift was subtle at first. Undetectable. . . unless one lived in Argo city. . . . the site of the "original sin" . . . something was happening to us . . . a rise in crime, unemployment, homelessness, the scent of violence in the air . . . on everything . . ." He also believed that the spirits of the Phantom Zone, those jailed there, had cursed the House of El, and would follow Jor-el, wherever he may go. So, since the planet was dying, and Jor-el was sending his son to earth, he believed that the spirits would follow him, and condemn the civilizations there. That is why he saved his daughter. To go to earth, kill Kal-el, and save the population of Kal-el's new planet. I believe that Zor-el was going slightly mad. But then you have to ask yourself, does a mad person truly know he's mad. So now we have the background story. Where are we going to go from here? And will Kara ever reveal to Kal-el her true mission? Best incarnation of Supergirl yet. I hope it sticks around for a long time to come.
