Final Crisis Aftermath Run! #6 - DC

This issue wraps up the sad story of Mike Miller . . the Human Flame. Well . . maybe wrapping it up isn't the right way to think about it. This whole series, Mike's only goal had been to get enough power that he no longer has to run . . from anybody. He's been running his whole life, and he's tired of it. Anyways, last issue he came into contact with the hyper-griffin at STAR Labs and when John Stewart, Firestorm and Red Tornado try to apprehend him, he explodes into a nuclear blast. That's how last issue ended. This issue, the guys have to contain the blast. And then . . they have to try to contain Mike. Apparently the blast took away everything that was human about him and now he appears to be a being of energy and fire. The problem is . . he's got the same dumb intellect that he had before. As he goes on a rampage through town he's oblivious that it's his own heat and mass that's taking out buildings and roads and cars around him. Sure he's doing some destruction on his own. But most of it is peripheral simply from the proximity of his being. But he's still not satisfied. He's angry that the 'heroes' are still trying to take him down. So he grows . . in size and mass . . up to 200 feet. Up to the point where he can no longer control, or move his being . . and he's trapped. Red Tornado asks the question, 'He could change his size at will. Why didn't he just make himself smaller?' To which John replies, 'Honestly, I don't think it even ever occurred to him. All he ever talked about was getting more. Why would he ever consider going for less?' Basically they contain him . . like a nuclear reactor. So, although he's down and out for this series . . I don't think we've seen the last of this guy. I'm sure Prometheus or Black Mask or somebody will get ahold of him and try to use him to their advantage. But . . that's a story for another book. This book seemed to be mostly about turning Mike Miller into more than he was before. Not more intellectually, just . . more power. Matthew Sturges and Freddie Williams II again bring us this chapter of the book. I thought it was interesting. The ending really went the only way it could. But like I said. I don't think we've seen the last of the Human Flame.

  2. I agree with you on that. It definitely seemed like it had more 'potential' in the beginning, and then kind of whimped out at the end. I still enjoyed the series, but . . yes, it could have had a better ending, or resolution. It just seemed like there were so many different directions that they could've gone with Mike's character. But then once they got stuck in the path they decided to choose . . I didn't necessarily agree that it was the best way to take the character. But hey! I only read 'em. I don't write 'em. So who am I to say?
