Superman Confidential #5 - DC

We come a step closer this issue to finding out what exactly is going on with that big green rock that everyone seems to want. Currently it is in possession of Tony Gallo, a mobster who has just recently opened a Casino in Metropolis. It also appears that, up to this point in our story, no one really knows what Kryptonite is yet. Apparently there is a being trapped in this big hunk of rock. It's still alive and can hear and sense it's surroundings. It says that it came off the planet the same time that the rocket carrying Kal-el left it. In fact they were, more or less, traveling companions on their trip from Krypton to Earth. Well now he's taken possession of Tony's body, so that he can talk to Kal-el. And he enlisted the help of Lois and Jimmy, two of Superman's most trusted allies, to convince him to let them capitulate. Unfortunately, at this exact same time, Lex Luthor is also after the rock. He's been eavesdropping and has learned what it can do to Superman. So when this being leaves Tony's body, and takes Superman's spirit on a journey to fill him in on the rest of the story . . . that is when Lex decides to strike. And that's also the end of our story this issue. I really think Darwyn Cooke does well with these older style stories. He really seems to have a feel, and flavor, for the atmosphere and personalities of the people in the beginnings of the DC Universe. And with Tim Sale doing the artwork for him . . . this book really feels like something from early in Superman's career. I really like the feel that both of them have brought to this book. Now we just need to find out what's going on with this . . . Kryptonite man . . . as it were.
