Nation X #1 - Marvel

As the title implies, this is a book about the new X-Men population . . Nation-X . . Utopia. But, as witnessed by the cover, Nation-X consist of many divergent personalities. It appears that this book is going to be a collection of short stories trying to bring us up to date on the happenings of as many of it's citizens as it can. We start out with a story about the Young X-Men and Magneto. Being the adventurous youth that they are, they've been exploring the tunnels around the island. However, while in them, Mercury seems to have been taken hostage by a ghost. Magneto is quick to volunteer his services in looking into this little mystery. What we find out is that Magneto still has some secrets hidden about the island. Things that even he forgot about. They run into a cache of Sentinels, and a 'danger-room' of sorts. But the real problem . . the 'ghost', is a bit of machinery that has been brought to life because of the recent activity on the island . . Magneto's security protocols. Magneto deals with it, without letting the kids know what's going on. Unfortunately, I think this is something that may come back to bite Scott in the butt somewhere along the line. It appears that Magneto's motivations aren't as above board as he first let on. But we all knew he was up to something. This story is brought to us by Simon Spurrier and Leonard Kirk. Next we see Kurt and Logan out on a little road trip. The gist of this story is that Kurt is upset about the current direction of the X-Men. 'This is not the dream we'd always fought for. In fact, it's a lot like the one we fought against.' Logan tries to explain that it's a different world now. But I don't think Kurt bought it. I think this story kind of express' the feelings and thoughts of many of the mutants in Nation-X right now. I think he's just been the first one to voice them. This story is brought to us by James Asmus and Michael Allred. Next is a story about the roles that the various X-Men have been cast in to. Such as Bobby as mentor . . or tutor. It's not a role that he would've picked for himself, but . . because of his seniority and experience, it's one that he's found himself having to adapt to because of the younger and newer members in their extended family. It was an interesting story by Chris Yost and Michele Bertilorenzi. Also Bobby may have found himself a new girl-friend. Finally, in a story about Peter, Illyana has come to him to ask for help with the New Mutants. It's not important what they've asked him to do, but . . he learns that he's been spending to much time living in the past. All he does is talk about his commune back in Russia, and his little 'snowflake'. All the while he spends his time building a memorial to the X-Men that have fallen. In this story he realizes that he needs to spend more time in the present, and enjoying the 'here and now'. It appears that he's still bothered by the loss of Kitty. It was a touching story by Scott Snyder and David Lopez. So it appears that's what this series is going to be like. We won't get any really important stories, but we will see the thoughts and feelings of various X-Men that aren't showcased in the main titles. Well . . except for Magneto. I think that may be an important story-line. We'll see.
