Ultimate Comics Avengers #001 - Marvel

Another reintroduction into the Ultimate Universe. This time by Mark Millar and Carlos Pacheco. I guess they've decided to discard the Ultimates, and just go with the good 'ol standby . . Avengers. They've also brought Nick Fury back into the Ultimate Universe with this issue. Remember, he's been on leave over in the Supreme Universe. And if you don't have all of that straight . . I'm sure there's a scorecard around here somewhere. This story takes place 3 weeks after the Ultimatum Wave, and Nick's found out that his pride and joy, the Triskelion was almost torn apart in the process. But Nick's not back to take over again. That job's going to stay with Carol Danvers for the time being. Nick's been brought back for a special mission. "Captain America's gone rogue. The story's on the verge of going public and SHIELD Director Danvers needs you back to lead a black ops team to capture him. He found out, Nick. Cap knows about the Red Skull." It appears that the day before Hawkeye and Cap were taking out some AIM agents in a couple of helicopters when Cap came face to face with their new Ultimate Soldier. Cap really takes a beating too. The guys got a red skull . . obviously, and a cross tattooed on his forehead. He really gives Cap much more than he was expecting. "You're wondering who I am? How this man you've never met before just took you apart? Well, come a little closer and I'll tell you, Captain . . ." He whispers something in his ear, and then tosses him out of the helicopter. Hawkeye has to make a huge leap . . literally, from the other copter, and try to catch Cap and bring him down with his own chute. Of course Clint didn't wear one. You know how he likes to push the envelope. Anyways, they make it down and Cap is still dazed. "How did he do that? Who the hell were you fighting back there?" What did he whisper in his ear? "He said . . he's my son." Wow! I really wasn't expecting that. You know . . now that I think about it, maybe the Ultimates are still around. SHIELD is still in place, and Carol's leading it, so . . I assume she's in charge of the Ultimates. Which means that these Avengers will be a separate entity entirely. Maybe the Avengers is a name that's supposed to be taken literally. This is only the first issue, so . . anything can happen from here. There's also a conversation between Carol and Tony, but . . I'm not sure what the point was. Unless it was just to illustrate the growing friction and lack of respect between them. Anyways, I thought this was a great issue. The story was great. There was a huge 'set-up', and . . the artwork looked fantastic. What more could we ask for? I think this is going to be a book you'll need to watch.
