the Mighty #7 - DC

It seems like this book is getting darker and darker with every issue. We know that Alpha is gathering up people . . we just don't know why. I assume it's always easiest to expect the worst . . he's killing them . . taking body parts . . removing fluids necessary for his existence . . whatever . . but, maybe he's actually got an altruistic motivation for what he's doing. But then . . why is he killing people? It seems that whenever he takes a family member back to his 'sanctuary', he leaves other members of the family behind . . dead. He gathers up a young boy this issue. And, when he and Cole go to bust up a terrorist organization . . we find out, because their conversation is translated for us, that these guys were actually putting together a nuclear bomb because . . . Alpha One has told them to. They were working for him. Of course Cole doesn't know this . . yet . . because he doesn't understand the language, and . . all of them but one are dead by the time he gets there. Also Cole gets a couple of other pieces of information this issue. The bullets that he found are actually compressed nitrous oxide designed to explode on impact. Martinez, the guy Coles talking to, doesn't know exactly why Rhines asked him to make them, but he assumes it's induce cerebral hypoxia in the victim. The other thing Cole finds out . . at the end of the issue . . is that his wife's been in a car accident . . and she's been burnt to a crisp. The only way they can even identify her is that the police found her license in her wallet . . or at least part of it . . the part with her name. I love the story that Peter J Tomasi and Keith Champagne have presented us in this series so far. It's kept us guessing every issue. We can assume that Alpha One is corrupt, or on his own agenda, or something. But we don't know why . . or what caused it . . or how long he's been like this. He's supposed to be the greatest hero in the world. But he may just be the most dangerous criminal in the world. Right now . . it's all speculation. Issue after issue. Chris Samnee is also doing a great job with the art. He's got a way of really turning the page moody, when he wants to. I really like it. I just wish I knew what was going on.
