the Amazing Spider-man #603 - Marvel

Last issue the Chameleon had taken Peter hostage and assumed his identity. He doesn't know he's Spider-man, but he's working for a terrorist organization that wants to make a statement in NYC. After staking out City Hall, he notices that Peter is in tight with the Mayor. He's looking for the headquarters for NYC's shadow command . . "The Al-Qaeda's of the world would like nothing more that to take out the counterterrorism nerve center of their favorite target." So with Peter on the Mayor's photo unit now, he knows it's only a matter of time before he's taken there for some photo-op. In the meantime, he just settles into Peter's life waiting for an opportunity. How? "The truth is, none of us really knows anyone else. What we're capable of at any given moment. We cannot see beyond our own lives and desires. Other people, well . . they're just part of the background." All I have to say is that when Peter gets back . . he's gonna have a heck of a mess to clean up. No, Chameleon didn't hurt anybody, but . . he did put Peter in some precarious situations. First he sleeps with Michelle . . again. So she thinks she's in love. Then he meets up with MJ. First he tells her that she doesn't compare to Gwen. Then, when MJ has a stalker after her . . some guy who's trying to get her to look at his screenplay . . he goes outside to 'talk to him', and ends up pistol-whipping him. That's going to come back to bite Peter. During their conversation though is when the Chameleon realizes that Peter's best friend is Harry Osborn. Then he finally gets his opportunity because Jonah wants to get a photo with a real American war hero. So while he, Glory and Flash are on their way to the top secret hide-out, he taunts Flash because he saw what Flash had wrote to him in his yearbook. That's not going to help their relationship any. And, while there, he leaves a tracking device in the bathroom, so he can find the place and come back and bomb it. Oh yeah, and he figures that Peter has had to put up with Harry's snobbish demeanor his whole life . . "He had to suffer this rich twit Osborn, who had the world laid at his feet. But turned his nose up at it. Lord, how that must have gnawed at you, Peter." So he goes to the coffee bean . . and shoots him. On the last page we find out that Peter has actually survived the acid-bath that the Chameleon used . . he thought, to finish him. I'm sure he feels like he just went through hell, but he doesn't even know the damage that's been done in his name. In just one day. I hate to see the damage the Chameleon could've caused if he'd actually tried. I really feel bad for Peter. It's gonna' take a lot to clean up this mess. Fred Van Lente did a great job with this issue. I really liked the story and how everything was addressed. It was also neat to see Peter's life through somebody else's eyes. Robert Atkins did the pencils. I can't wait to see what happens next.
