the Amazing Spider-man #593 - Marvel

First of all, we're getting some pretty cool Joe Quesada covers on this book right now. You'd think being Editor in Chief and all, he'd be to busy for that. But we had a cool one this month and last. Anyways, this story-arc appears to be put together by Mark Waid and Mike McKone. Basically, Spider-man just got back from the macro-verse, with the FF, and as soon as he returns, 2 and 1/2 months later, he finds that old buddy JJ has been elected Mayor of New York City. He tries to mend fences . . you know, civic responsibility, and all that. But JJ isn't having it. In fact . . he's created and implemented an Anti-Spider Squad. Peter has his first run-in with them this issue. They hit him with laser-targeted ultrasonics. However, because of Peter's determination to get under JJ's skin, he's been hitting the city 24/7 and the citizens are starting to notice. So when he gets thrown off-balance, it's the citizens around him that come to his rescue. They badger the Police giving Peter time to recover. So then they decide to set a trap for him. He gets out of it, but then he has a run-in with this new Vulture. We really don't know what he's called, but in the shadows that's who he looks like. However, up close . . he wears all red leather, has glowing red eyes, and a jaw-line that looks like something off of one of those Predator aliens. My first guess is he's some kind of vampire. But we don't really know yet. However, he does spit in Spidey's face, and it's a stinging corrosive acid. It eats right through his mask, and now Peter feels like he's been blinded. Overall, I thought it was an ok issue. We catch up a little bit on Aunt May's relationship with JJ's father. But really that's the only supporting cast that we see. I haven't disliked this new direction with this title . . ever since One More Day. But . . everybody that's written this book since, seems to have a hard time balancing all the supporting characters. We'll see Harry in one issue, but then we won't see him again for about 6 more. The same goes for Aunt May, or Vin, or really anybody else for that matter. To me, that's always been the strength of this title . . the supporting cast, and the important roles that they all play in Peter's life. Like I said, I don't dislike the book. It's just . . different. The supporting cast is all there . . they just don't get as much attention now. That's sad!
