Ultimate Comics Spider-man #7 - Marvel

So now . . not only is Spidey and all of his amazing friends living at Aunt May's house . . Johnny Storm, Bobby Drake, Kitty Pryde, Gwen Stacey, but . . we find out this issue that Rick Jones happens to live right down the street. He's about Peter's age, and goes to Midtown with him and the rest of the crew. But . . nobody really knows him or anything. So they don't know that about 6 months ago he manifested some type of power that put him into a coma. Now 6 months later, he's returning home from the hospital and the rumors around the neighborhood is that he had a problem with drugs. But really . . his mom would rather they thought that than to know the truth. She thinks he's a mutant. And she's afraid that if anybody finds out . . they'll take her boy away from her. As it turns out though . . it's something completely different. If you followed the Ultimate Fantastic Four you'd know that at the end of that series, and during Ultimatum, some obelisks appeared around the world. They were like little stone pillars with an eye carved into the top of them. I guess they're this world's version of the Watchers. Anyways, while Reed was trying to figure out what they were, the one they were looking at took possession of Sue. And they/she tells Reed and company . . 'The Herald has been chosen. One human has been chosen to protect this world. To help find it's future. We have given this one the power to do so.' But . . they never found out who it was. In fact . . everyone pretty much forgot about it. Until Rick tells Spidey & friends . . 'I'm not a mutant. This. These powers were given to me. This eye. This eye came to me and said so. Like floating. Right in front of me.' That's when Johnny puts it all together with what he experiences with Reed and Sue. Anyways, when Rick comes home, Aunt May goes down to console his mother. That's when she comes clean with May and express' her concern about what'll happen if anybody finds out that her boy is a mutant. The first thing May does . . she goes home and calls a family meeting. And then she tells the boys . . 'I think you boys need to suit up. Whatever you . . you kids call it when you put on your costumes and go be super heroes. You need to do that.' And then she gives them a mission. Basically . . she wants them to go talk to Rick and find out what's going on. I thought that was great. Leave it to May to adapt to their situation and try to use their unique personalities to help others. That's the thing I like about this book . . as well as the previous incarnation . . I think Brian Bendis does a fantastic job with these characters. I love the dialogue and interaction between them. And, he's done some amazing character development over the years that he's been on this book. I still contend that this is one of my favorite Spider-man books ever. This issue Takeshi Miyazawa fills in on the pencils. I kind of liked the unique style that he brought to this book. It was different. Well . . different from what's been done here before. It had a kind of Manga feel to it . . in spots. Anyways, I love this book and I look forward to it every month.
