Ultimate Comics Spider-man #001 - Marvel

I'm so glad this book came back. This story picks up about 6 months after the Ultimatum wave. I was worried, but . . Brian Bendis has remained the writer, so . . this incarnation has much the same feel as the last. Yes some things are shaken up, but . . it's still a human interest book, and character driven. That's what I liked the most about the first series, and what I thought was the strongest point . . Brian really breathed life into these characters. He really made the reader care about them. And, after reading this issue, my only complaint is that Peter was brought back so fast. I thought there'd be a little bit more suspense involved with his return, but . . I guess this is one way to go at it too. We jump right back into the story here . . New York has been rebuilt and is ready to open for business. Of course with that comes the people looking to take advantage of the hoopla and confusion. We see a smash and grab occur at a convenience store, but rather than Spider-man being first on the scene, there's another vigilante present . . a new one. We don't know who this person is, or what his powers are. Actually, we don't know the gender for sure either. But, he/she is very strong and appears to be on the side of angels. He/she takes out this gang pretty fast, and although he was capable of killing them . . he didn't. He beat them up pretty bad, but . . he didn't cross that line. Then he takes off before anybody but the store clerk sees him. Spider-man comes up shortly afterwards and we see how he's the crown jewel of NYC now. The clerk is star-struck by his appearance, as are the Police officers that arrive shortly afterwards. Peters having a hard time adjusting to all of this adulation. It's just not normal . . at least not for him. We also see, when he returns home, that Gwen is waiting for him. They're hot and heavy right now. And Aunt May is taking the whole Spider-man thing in stride. "Just got home. Could you wash my uniform?" To which May replies, "Put it in the pile. Kitty called. And then . . Johnny Storm shows up at their front door. "I just . . I need somewhere to crash. Can . . can I stay here . . tonight? I hate to ask. I just need a bed or . . " We don't know what's wrong with him yet, but . . he's either exhausted, malnutritioned, or worse. And there's 2 new / old criminals back in town. We see that Wilson Fisk is back in place as the Kingpin. It seems that in the Ultimatum Wave all the evidence against him was washed away. But he may not be around for long as another criminal shows up . . I assume Mysterio (?) . . and drops him from the top of his skyscraper. "Humpty Dumpty. Very nice. That'll look good on the resume." I thought it was a great book. But . . I'm a little biased because I loved the previous version. David Lafuiente does the art . . which is completely different from Mark Bagley's or Stuart Immonen's, but . . that's ok. With a fresh start, we should have a fresh look. All in all, I thought he did a good job. So we got lots of story-lines to get back into here, not to mention all new ones . . and an all new title to wrap it all up in. Sometimes the stars align just right.

  2. At the end of the Ultimate run . . the first one . . Gwen is actually a symbiote, like Venom. She was red like Carnage, but . . the story never really went any where. There's a scene in one book where Peter comes home and Gwen is waiting in his room. It's dark so he can't see her face, but when he does it's Venom's face. Then she changes back. But so far in this series, that's never been brought up. However, this whole Peter/Gwen relationship kind of happened without Peter even really knowing that it was going from 0 to 60. So, maybe she's got some kind of sway over him or something. I don't know. Like you said, it's never really been explained.
