First of all, let me say, this comic is not at all what I expected it to be. Which is good . . and bad. I expected this to be all about Batman, Bruce, and whatever the Black Hand did after he desecrated his grave and was licking his skull. That was a disturbing image. However, I'm glad that Bruce wasn't immediately brought back as a member of the Black Lanterns because . . well honestly, that's what Marvel would've done. They would've created an 'out' for Batman dying, and this would've been the vehicle of his resurrection. I'm not saying that might not happen eventually, however . . it's not blatantly obvious as it would've been at the Marvel-ous competition. Actually, this story seems to be more about how this 'crisis' is affecting the various members of the Batman-family. I especially liked that Boston Brand's story was handled in this book. His corpse is also raised, and he is drawn to it. However, after entering, and seeing everything that it sees . . as far as the Darkest Night is concerned . . he can't stick around and decides to run for help. So he heads straight to the guy that's helped him before . . Batman. He enters him just as Dick and Damian are heading down the road in the Bat-mobile. "Grayson's Batman?!? BRUCE IS DEAD??!? And just who the hell are you, kid?!?" Damian's overwhelmed by the situation, he's still dealing with having to look at his father's grave and wrap his bones in his own cape. He screams, "I'm Robin! Who the hell are you?!?", and he starts punching Dick in the face. It's hilarious. Boston soon realizes that he's not going to get any answers this way, so after driving the car off the road he decides to switch bodies. The contact with Boston has Dick filled in on the entire situation. It seems like the effects of the Black rings are spreading out like a spider's web. They go after their intended targets first, and then the subsidiary or supporting characters that are associated with them. Black Hand physically went after Bruce. But then the rings went after Thomas and Martha. Now they're also retrieving John & Mary Grayson, and Jack & Janet Drake. It's like they're trying to strike at their targets by gathering up those closest to them. The issue ends with Batman summoning Red Robin back to Gotham from Europe. He's hesitant at first . . until Dick tells him what's happened to his parents. We also see that the rings have gone after an envoy of dead criminals that was on it's way to JLA headquarters for storage. I think it's fantastic that Boston Brand has become such an intricate player in this little drama. He's another one of my favorite characters. Peter J Tomasi did a terrific job with this book. I also really enjoyed Adrian Syaf's artwork. He really captured the dark images in this book. I can't wait to see the Superman and Teen Titans' story. This is a great summer to be a Green Lantern fan.
I spend a lot of time and money buying and reading comics. Most of the time I'm happy with my choices, sometimes not. I'm hoping, that with my reviews on what I've read, I might spare someone else dissapointment. I'll read anything, but I can't afford everything. If there's something you'd like for me to read, let me know. If you take the time to read this, please, take the time to let me know what you think. I may not agree with you, or you may not agree with me. But, so what. That's life.
