Blackest Night #2 - DC

After reading this issue . . it seems to me that there's really no hope for the living. I mean if Black Hand can raise anyone he wants from the dead, I'd imagine there's an awful lot of resources for him to draw from . Of course, I understand that's how these stories always seem in the beginning . . there's no hope or chance of winning until, all of a sudden there is. But that doesn't make this issue seems any less dark and hopeless. The issue starts out with Ray Palmer calling Carter. He wants some advice on his feelings for Jean, but he doesn't know that Carter is already dead. The last we see of Ray, he's on his way to his house. Garth and Mera are on their way to Arthur's grave. He's buried at the lighthouse, but they've decided to take him back to his home . . Atlantis. However when they get there, his grave is also empty. They soon come face to face with he, Tula and Dolphin. Now the scary part is all these corpses seem to have the same powers as they did when they were alive. Also . . how do they take them out. They're already dead. And when Mera blasts Dolphin's head off . . she grows a new one. How can these things possibly be beaten. They talk as if they're alive, just turned over to the dark side, but . . there's no reasoning with them. They want to hurt those that are alive. And then . . Tula rips out Garth's heart thereby converting him. It seems to me as if the Black Lanterns have nothing to lose and everything to gain. We also see Boston Brand affected by these events. But his unique situation I think is going to be a conundrum. Hawk and Dove are brought back. Also Crispus Allen, although technically the Spectre . . is still dead. So, apparently he's eligible for recruitment. Although the Phantom Stranger, Blue Devil and Zatanna try to fight it . . there's just not much they can do. And then Hal and Barry try to take out J'onn in a pyre of fire. However when the smoke clears, he's still coming after them, but now he's got Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Ralph and Sue Digby, and Firestorm by his side. "My name is Hal Jordan. I'm an officer of the Green Lantern Corps, space sector 2814. I was chosen because overcoming fear isn't a problem. But the rulebook never said anything about death." In the back of the book we get a few pages from a diary of sorts of William Hands. In them he talks about the dead. He talks about the Hawks and the city of St Roch. But the most chilling words are his final ones . . "There will be no six feet under anywhere. There won't have to be. Love will soon be dead. Rage is next!" This was an incredible story by Geoff Johns that is beautifully drawn by Ivan Reis. Like I said, right now it seems like there's no hope. I know that eventually 'good' will win. But right now . . I really don't see how.
